Bam Adebayo contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Miami Heat, making them the first No. 8 seed to compete for an NBA championship since the 1999 New York Knicks. On the other hand, the top-seeded Denver Nuggets have been awaiting their opponent since sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers on May 22.

Having won the first three games, including two in Boston, the Heat only needed one more victory to reach the NBA Finals. No team in NBA playoff history had failed to advance after taking a 3-0 lead in a series.
The Celtics drew inspiration from a documentary about the Boston Red Sox's remarkable comeback from a 3-0 deficit against the New York Yankees on their way to winning the 2004 World Series. They were motivated further when former Yankees players Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter were in attendance for Game 4 in Miami.
Boston went on to win Games 4 and 5 convincingly and held a comfortable lead in Game 6 before Miami staged a comeback, taking a one-point lead with just 3 seconds left. Although Marcus Smart's desperation three-pointer missed, Derrick White's putback in the final 0.1 seconds tied the game and forced a decisive seventh game.
Back at home, the Celtics hyped up the crowd with a pregame video featuring highlights from the Red Sox's comeback, along with a recorded message from Kevin Millar, a key player in the 2004 Red Sox team.
