The highly-regarded midfielder appeared destined to reunite with Erik ten Hag last summer, but the transfer was seemingly hindered by financial complications. As part of Frenkie de Jong's contract extension at Barcelona in 2020, which prolonged his stay until 2026, he agreed to a temporary reduction in wages due to the pandemic, with the assurance that he would be compensated in subsequent seasons.

Given the outstanding wages still owed to him, the 26-year-old was hesitant to pursue a move while the matter remained unresolved. Manchester United eventually abandoned their pursuit of De Jong and turned their attention to signing experienced players such as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen instead.
