Sevilla wins record seventh Europa League title, defeating Roma 4-1 on penalties

Sevilla clinched their seventh Europa League title by defeating AS Roma 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time. Paula Dybala scored for Roma in the first half, but Gianluca Mancini's own goal leveled the score in the second half. The thrilling match took place in Budapest on Wednesday evening.

In the Europa League final, Sevilla emerged victorious against Roma as Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made crucial penalty saves. The match concluded with Argentine Gonzalo Montiel securing the decisive spot kick for Sevilla, defeating Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Gonzalo Montiel, the Argentine international, confidently converted his retaken penalty to secure a 4-1 shootout victory against Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time in Budapest, where Jose Mourinho aimed to preserve his unbeaten record in European final matches.

"I've won five finals and I lost this one, but I'm coming back home proud again," Mourinho told Sky Sport Italy. "The boys gave everything."

Roma's Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez were unable to score from the penalty spot against Sevilla goalkeeper Bounou. Meanwhile, Montiel initially missed his penalty but got a second opportunity after Patrício was deemed to have stepped off his line.

Sevilla's victory in the Europa League final not only extends their unbeaten record in finals but also secures them a spot in the next season's Champions League. Despite a challenging season where they struggled in the Spanish league and were eliminated from the Champions League, the arrival of coach Jose Luis Mendilibar turned their fortunes around. Mendilibar expressed his happiness and acknowledged the positive impact their success can have on the club's future.

Prior to the final, Jose Mourinho had more European title wins than Mendilibar had total games managed in those competitions. However, Mendilibar's career has been on an upward trajectory since joining Sevilla just two months ago. Despite the loss, Mourinho showed grace and congratulated Sevilla on their victory, emphasizing his pride in his team's performance. Dybala gave Roma the lead, but Mancini's own goal resulted in an equalizer for Sevilla. The match was intense and closely contested, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Belotti and Suso had chances to secure a win for their respective teams but were unable to convert.

Sevilla had the advantage during extra time but failed to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities, while Roma's Chris Smalling came close to scoring with a header that hit the crossbar. Taking over from Jorge Sampaoli in March, Mendilibar became Sevilla's third coach of the season when the team was just two points clear of relegation in La Liga. Under Mendilibar's guidance, Sevilla has lost only two out of 11 league games and currently sits just one point behind seventh place heading into the final round of matches this weekend.
