The Red Sox Appoint Former Player Craig Breslow as Chief Baseball Officer Following the Dismissal of Chaim Bloom, According to a Report
Since the announcement of Chaim Bloom's departure on September 14, the Boston Red Sox have been operating without a leader in their baseball operations department. This changes with the recent news of their appointment of Craig Breslow as the new head of baseball operations. According to The Boston Globe, Breslow has accepted the role, which will carry the official title of Chief Baseball Officer, the same as Bloom's former position.
Craig Breslow is a name that should ring a bell for baseball enthusiasts, especially Red Sox fans. The 43-year-old pitcher spent portions of 12 seasons in the major leagues, including five seasons with the Boston Red Sox. He played a vital role in the bullpen of the 2013 World Series champion Red Sox, boasting an impressive 1.81 ERA in 61 regular-season appearances that year. Breslow also made 10 appearances in the playoffs during that season, with a 2.45 ERA in 7 1/3 innings.
Breslow's last professional outing was in 2017, when he pitched for Cleveland and Minnesota. After graduating from Yale, he joined Theo Epstein's front office with the Chicago Cubs in January 2019, holding the title of Director of Strategic Initiatives for Baseball Operations. Following the 2019 season, he was promoted to Director of Pitching and Special Assistant to the President and General Manager. Another promotion came his way after the 2020 season, elevating him to Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Pitching.
Breslow's rapid ascent in the world of baseball front offices, from his initial role in 2019 to heading one of the sport's premier franchises before the close of 2023, is a remarkable achievement. It may also reflect a recent trend in front-office hires. While there has been a move away from hiring former players to run the baseball operations side for many years, recent developments have seen the Texas Rangers hiring Chris Young and, just a few weeks ago, the Chicago White Sox appointing Chris Getz to similar roles. While it doesn't signify a complete shift in approach, as demonstrated by the New York Mets' hiring of David Stearns, it is certainly a noteworthy trend.
The Red Sox clinched the World Series championship in 2018, reached the ALCS in 2021, and have landed in the cellar of their division for the past two consecutive years.
