San Antonio Spurs players Victor Wembanyama and Jeremy Sochan are set to participate in the NBA All-Star weekend's Panini Rising Stars tournament, showcasing young talents alongside their peers. The tournament comprises four teams, each led by retired basketball stars.
Wembanyama played for Team Pau, a team of rookies under the coaching of Hall of Famer Pau Gasol. On the other hand, Sochan, initially not part of the event, was drafted as a replacement for Shaedon Sharpe on Team Jalen, led by Jalen Rose. The remaining two teams are led by retired WNBA star Tamika Catchings and former Dallas Mavericks star Detlef Schrempf.
Before the tournament, members of Team Pau were interviewed about whom they were excited to throw alley-oops to in the Rising Stars game. Miami Heat's Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Golden State Warriors' Brandin Podziemski mentioned Wembanyama in their responses. The Warriors rookie also added,

Social media users promptly noticed the cameraman's deliberate effort to capture Sochan's response to Podziemski's statement about throwing lob passes to Wembanyama. Sochan has faced considerable criticism for allegedly neglecting to pass the ball to his rookie teammate. Throughout the season, fans have compiled videos highlighting instances where Sochan appears to avoid passing to Wembanyama when he is in a favorable scoring position.
Sochan playfully acknowledged on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that Podziemski playfully caught him off guard with his response regarding throwing lob passes to Wembanyama.
Sochan, originally a power forward, found himself in the point guard role due to the absence of a designated playmaker in the Spurs' starting lineup. Unsurprisingly, this adjustment led to challenges in his playmaking responsibilities, resulting in criticism on social media. He faced particular scrutiny for perceived shortcomings in passing to Wembanyama and opting for contested shots. His removal from active playing duties in January has somewhat alleviated the social media pressure on the young player.
