Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn make a getaway from New York in the first glimpse of "A Quiet Place: Day One."
Djimon Hounsou, known for his role in "Part II," reprises his role in this prequel, revisiting the day when extraterrestrial beings first arrived on Earth.
The upcoming A Quiet Place movie introduces a simple yet ingenious twist to the storyline—maintaining the core premise of the previous films while changing the setting. This alteration significantly impacts the stakes involved. The original 2018 horror-thriller by John Krasinski introduced the Abbott family, who adapted to a life of silence on their rural upstate New York farm in a world terrorized by blind extraterrestrial creatures that rely on sound to hunt. The narrative continued in the 2021 sequel, A Quiet Place: Part II. Now, in A Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel and the franchise's first spinoff, the film explores how the residents of New York City, known for its bustling noise, coped with the arrival of these deadly creatures on Earth.
Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, set to star in the movie alongside Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn, shares her thoughts on the concept of a quiet New York. She emphasizes how difficult it is to envision such a scenario, considering the city's inherent noise. Living there, one naturally tunes out the sounds, making it challenging to imagine surviving in a world where silence is imperative, especially in a city like New York.
EW presents an exclusive first look at A Quiet Place: Day One, a film that delves into the initial day of the alien invasion, a brief glimpse explored by Krasinski in the opening flashback of A Quiet Place: Part II. Crafted with a new narrative by Krasinski and Day One's writer-director, Michael Sarnoski, the movie unfolds the global response to the invasion. Although a direct sequel, A Quiet Place: Part III, was initially slated for a 2025 release, the timeline for its development has been altered.
Lupita Nyong'o takes on the role of Sam, a woman embarking on a day trip to New York City when the alien monsters make their entrance. As chaos ensues, she teams up with Eric (Joseph Quinn), and despite initial reluctance, they agree to navigate the city together to survive.
Nyong'o reflects on the unique dynamic of the film, diverging from the family-focused narrative of the first two A Quiet Place installments. Unlike the Abbott family in the previous chapters, the characters in Day One are disparate individuals thrust into each other's lives during a pivotal moment for the world. The film explores how they negotiate survival together, leading to intriguing and surprising chemistry among the characters.
Joseph Quinn, known for his role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season 4, sees Day One as more of an escape movie than a survival tale. He describes it as a character-driven drama, emphasizing the exploration of two lost individuals trying to navigate their fates in a quieter, bleaker reality. The film primarily revolves around Eric and Sam and their mutual acceptance of this new, more subdued reality, with encounters with other compelling characters along the way.
Several other characters in A Quiet Place: Day One are portrayed by Alex Wolff from Sarnoski's Pig and Djimon Hounsou, a familiar face from A Quiet Place. Although details about their roles and how they fit into the unfolding events are kept under wraps, Hounsou's presence suggests that Day One serves as an origin story for his character, who played a crucial role in creating a safe haven on a remote island in Part II before Regan inadvertently attracted monsters to their location.
Lupita Nyong'o, when discussing Hounsou's involvement, appreciates his contribution to carrying forward the legacy of the previous film. Whether viewers will finally learn the name of his character, often referred to as "Man on Island," remains a tantalizing mystery. Nyong'o suggests that the film will provide satisfying answers.
Another integral character in the movie is Sam's cat, Frodo, who accompanies her to New York and remains a close companion throughout the journey. Nyong'o acknowledges director Michael Sarnoski's evident affinity for The Lord of the Rings, citing Frodo as a fitting companion in the film. Frodo's impact extends beyond the screen, as Nyong'o confesses that the feline turned her into a cat person, overcoming her initial fear of cats. The experience has transformed her into a proud cat mom, with cat fur becoming a symbol of affection she never anticipated.
A Quiet Place: Day One is scheduled to hit theaters on June 28.
