Aryna Sabalenka emerges victorious at the Miami Open in her first match following the passing of her former partner.
Aryna Sabalenka triumphed over Paula Badosa in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday, competing shortly after the passing of her former partner, ex-professional ice hockey player Konstantin Koltsov.
As the world No. 2 from Belarus, Sabalenka received a first-round bye due to her seeding. Her first appearance on the court this week was against Spain's Badosa, where she secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Koltsov, who notably played 144 games for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, tragically passed away in what the Miami-Dade Police Department has described as an "apparent suicide," with no suspicion of foul play.
Expressing her grief, Sabalenka stated in a Wednesday statement, "Konstantin's death is an unimaginable tragedy, and though we were no longer together, my heart is shattered. Please respect my privacy and his family's privacy during this challenging time."
Badosa, a close friend of Sabalenka's on the tour, openly discussed the emotional toll of the week before their match. Following their encounter on the court, the two embraced at the net, sharing a poignant moment together.
Badosa, speaking to reporters following her loss to Sabalenka, expressed no surprise at the Belarusian's formidable display on the court. She offered high praise, describing Sabalenka as a woman of immense strength and a commanding personality, qualities evident in her play. Badosa conveyed her belief that Sabalenka would perform exceptionally well and extended her best wishes for Sabalenka's continued success in the tournament.
Despite encountering some initial struggles, including three double faults in her opening service games, Sabalenka swiftly settled into her usual dominant rhythm. She capitalized on opportunities, breaking Badosa's serve at a crucial juncture, securing the first set. In the subsequent set, Sabalenka further asserted her dominance by breaking Badosa's serve twice more, all the while maintaining her own serve with steadfastness. Her victory was ultimately sealed after an hour and 23 minutes of intense play.
Looking ahead, Sabalenka's next challenge in the tournament awaits against Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, in other matches within the tournament, US Open champion Coco Gauff showcased her prowess by defeating Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska convincingly with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2. Gauff's impressive performance ensures her progression to the third round, signaling her intent to continue her strong showing in the competition.
