Jusuf Nurkic establishes a new record for single-game rebounds for the Suns in a game against the Thunder, despite the team ultimately facing a loss.

Phoenix Suns' center Jusuf Nurkic secured a new franchise record for single-game rebounds, reaching 28 rebounds during Sunday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the 118-110 loss, he concluded the match with an impressive total of 31 rebounds. This accomplishment surpassed the previous tie between Tyson Chandler in 2016 and the late Paul Silas in 1971, both holding the franchise record at 27 rebounds. Notably, no NBA player had exceeded 26 rebounds in a single game this season before Nurkic's remarkable performance.

Phoenix found themselves behind by a significant 24-point margin during the third quarter but managed to turn the tide by concluding the quarter with an impressive 25-5 run. This resurgence allowed them to seize the lead early in the fourth quarter. In addition to his outstanding rebounding performance, Jusuf Nurkic contributed 14 points and four assists. Nurkic dominated the opening quarter by securing all 12 rebounds for the Suns, marking the second occasion this year that he had achieved a dozen boards in a single period. His rebounding performance nearly surpassed the Thunder's overall rebound count of 13, making him the sole player in the league to achieve 12 rebounds in a quarter this season.

Despite concerns about his availability following a neck spasm in the previous day's loss to the Houston Rockets, Nurkic was deemed probable to play. His presence on the court provided the Suns with a considerable size advantage against the Thunder, particularly against the 208-pound 7-foot rookie center Chet Holmgren.

By the end of the first half, Nurkic had accumulated a total of 16 rebounds, just one shy of Tyson Chandler's record for the most boards in a half by a Suns player since 1996-97. Notably, no other Phoenix player managed to grab even two rebounds in the initial half. Additionally, the first-year Sun showcased his defensive skills by blocking Thunder wing Josh Giddey in transition and contributed six points on 3-for-9 shooting.

Even in the third quarter, his rebounding prowess showed no signs of slowing down, as he secured nine more, bringing his total to 25 and setting a new career high.

Nurkic's previous personal best was 23 rebounds during his time with the Portland Trail Blazers on New Year's Day in 2019. With the Suns, his previous high was 22, a feat he achieved twice earlier this year.

A remarkable aspect of Nurkic's performance was his distribution of 18 defensive rebounds and 13 offensive rebounds. This achievement, not seen since Charles Oakley in 1988, adds another layer to Nurkic's exceptional rebounding display, as reported by StatMuse.
