LA Rams standout Aaron Donald unexpectedly declares retirement from the NFL at the age of 32.

Defensive lineman Aaron Donald has declared his retirement following an illustrious 10-year tenure with the Los Angeles Rams. The three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year delivered his unexpected announcement via social media on Friday. Donald, aged 32, remained loyal to the Rams throughout his entire career, having been drafted by them in the first round back in 2014. He achieved remarkable milestones, earning selections for 10 Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro first teams. Additionally, he clinched the title of the league's top defensive player in 2017, 2018, and 2020.

Reflecting on his decision, Donald stated in a released statement, "Throughout my career, I devoted myself entirely to football both mentally and physically – dedicating 365 days a year to evolving into the best player I could be. I held this game in the highest regard, and I'm grateful to conclude my NFL journey with the franchise that initially drafted me. Not many individuals have the opportunity to be drafted by a team, win a world championship with that same team, and retire with them. I don't, and will never, take that privilege for granted."

Despite being smaller than many top defensive tackles, Donald utilized his exceptional athleticism and football intelligence to disrupt offenses consistently throughout his career. Serving as the linchpin of every Rams defense during his tenure, he attracted frequent double-teams from opponents, yet still managed to amass a franchise-record 111 sacks, ranking third among active players.

Donald's star ascended notably after the Rams relocated from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016. His pinnacle came in 2018 when he achieved a career-best 20 and a half sacks en route to his inaugural Super Bowl appearance.

Subsequently, Donald played a pivotal role in the Rams' journey to a Super Bowl triumph three years later, notably exerting pressure that led to Cincinnati's Joe Burrow throwing an incomplete pass at midfield on the Bengals' final play during Los Angeles' 23-20 victory.

Joining the ranks of Lawrence Taylor and JJ Watt, Donald became only the third player to clinch the Defensive Player of the Year award three times.

Despite being set to earn over $34 million this season as per the terms of a contract renegotiated nearly two years ago, reports suggest Donald had privately contemplated retirement over the past two seasons. However, neither the Rams nor Donald had publicly acknowledged the possibility of his departure until now.
